Simple Harmonic Motion
An introduction to oscillatory motion using a spring-mass system.
The Concept: SHM
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) is a special type of periodic motion where the restoring force on a moving object is directly proportional to the magnitude of the object's displacement and acts towards the object's equilibrium position. This results in a smooth, repeating oscillation, like a mass on a spring or a simple pendulum.
How to Use the Lab
- Press Start to see the mass oscillate.
- Adjust the Mass (m) and Spring Constant (k) to see how they affect the period of oscillation.
- The graphs show the real-time position, velocity, and acceleration of the mass.
- The energy bars illustrate the continuous conversion between Kinetic Energy (KE) and Potential Energy (PE).
